ZAPTEC: allows up to 50 percent faster charging rate on IT 3-phase

  • Company: Zaptec is world-leading on smart charging systems for electric cars in housing co-operatives, businesses and at home.

In Norway there are two types of low-voltage networks, IT networks with 230 volts and TN networks with 400 volts. IT networks are not widely used in the rest of the world, which is why car manufacturers have not prioritized them. Therefore, it came as a surprise that Tesla allowed 11 kilowatts of three-phase charge on their Model 3. This is an increase of the maximum charging speed of as much as 50 percent.

We quickly started a process, figuring out how to safely access this at all of our charging stations, says Knut Braut, Chief Technology Officer at ZAPTEC. Today, we have the pleasure of introducing a new firmware and software update. The update to your charging station will make it possible to charge with three phases on the 230-volt IT network with the correct current measurement at all phases. This feature is only available for electric vehicles that support this.

We currently know that the following models support three-phase charging on IT networks: Tesla Model X, Model S and Model 3. Read more about how to enable three-phase processing on ZAPTEC’s news pages here (norwegian only).
