Aquabio: develops the SeapiX 3D sonar for the fish farming industry

  • Sector: Sea
  • Date: December 10, 2020

  • Company: Waive help fish farmers to look beneath the surface to uncover actual conditions in their fish pens.

Aquabio is a supplier of the sonar SeapiX from IXblue for Norwegian fishing vessels, and a developer of the same hardware for new applications in the fishing industry. Aquabio is now launching its own product development to create a groundbreaking real-time production- and planning tool adapted for the fish farming industry.

Aquabio is now working to ensure that the technology provides a 3D model with accurate information about, among other things, feeding, number of fish, weight distribution between species and location. We will be the first in the world to provide a complete visualization of all the fish with exact placement in the water column, and how they move on an individual level, says Mikkel Straume, Project Manager at Aquabio. As an example, the system identifies the difference between salmon and cleaner fish inside the cage, or indicates whether salmon or trout is on the outside the cage. Then it’s due time to check if there are holes in the net, says Straume. An overview of the species outside the cage can also provide useful information about the possibility of increased threat of spiny dogfish or the Atlantic bluefin tuna.

Summer 2019, Aquabio conducted a test at Eide Fjordbruk fish farm in Vestland county. Aquabio visualized the cage, anchoring and the biomass around the cages. We have also tested that we can count individual feed pellets, so the system can be trained to a fully automatic tool for correct feeding, Straume explains. Product launch will be according to plan at Aqua Nor. Last summer conducted Aquabio a test cage with Eide Fjordbruk in Vestland county. Aquabio visualized cage, anchoring and biomass around the cage.
