FishGLOBE: enters into a joint venture with Grieg Seafood for floating closed-system aquaculture technology

  • Sector: Sea
  • Date: February 10, 2022

  • Company: FishGLOBE works on closed-system aquaculture technology that is developed to make the salmon industry more profitable, more sustainable, and with better fish welfare.

FishGLOBE and Grieg Seafood Rogaland have established the joint venture Next Seafood, aimed at realizing the FishGLOBE-concept for grow-out salmon. The two development permits granted to FishGLOBE in 2020 will be transfered to the JV.

Grieg Seafood Rogaland and FishGLOBE are currenty collaborating on producing post smolt in two smaller floating, closed containment fish farms (globes), in Southern Norway. The partnership allows Grieg Seafood Rogaland to keep their salmon for a shorter period of time in traditional fish farms, which has resulted in better sea lice control and less disease. The two companies have now established the joint venture to develop the technology further and adapt it to the grow-out salmon phase. While the globes for post-smolt are 3 500 cubic meters, the globe for grow-out salmon will be almost ten times as large – 30 000 cubic meters.

We aim to reduce our environmental impact, improve fish welfare and grow sustainably, says Nina Willumsen Grieg, Regional Director of Grieg Seafood Rogaland. We work a lot to achieve this goal, both by improving the traditional fish farming methods, but also by utilizing new technologies. Through the joint venture Next Seafood, our goal is to develop technology and expertise in the area of closed-containment ocean farming. We look forward to this journey, Willumsen Grieg concludes.

Our aim is to contribute to sustainable growth in the aquaculture industry by delivering floating closed-system farming technology for post smolt and now also full-size salmon, says Tor Hellestøl, CEO at FishGLOBE. The competence and experience of Grieg Seafood Rogaland maches our profile very well and we will take further steps in our technology development trough the joint venture Next Seafood. We are really looking forwart to the cooperation and the realization of the grow-out salmon globe.
